Fresh Coat of Paint

A neutral coat of paint has freshened up the Brutopia coffee shop in Cincinnati’s Clifton neighborhood. Artwork held up surprisingly well in front of the previously bright chartreuse walls, but the cool white they’ve selected looks professional and classic. Go get a great cappuccino this holiday season!
Speaking of holidays, artwork makes a great gift
Here are some recent works that I have available, please let me know if you’re interested!

The Best Cappuccino
Nearly every designer I’ve heard speak talks about the importance of exploration and experimentation. For better or worse, we often can’t do that to the extent that our jobs will allow us. For me, fine art is one outlet for experimentation. It also keeps my compositional skills sharp. My work, a collection of both familiar and fresh pieces, is on display at Brutopia this month. They have great cappuccino, you should go have one!

I recently discovered the digital macro feature on my Canon Powershot SD790 IS. I’ve nicknamed it the industrial design setting since it is perfect for shooting the tight details of your favorite products. If you have a Canon, you should check for it!

On Display at Red Tree Gallery

Starting this weekend, I’ll have three paintings (including Twelve Apostles Windy, above) in the Red Tree Gallery’s show Scapes. If you’re in town, check out the show at their new gallery, close to their old one on Madison. Thanks to Red Tree for exhibiting my work!

Mahan Gallery

In Columbus, every first Saturday night is a Gallery Hop, when the galleries stay open late alongside the bars and it’s a big arty party on High Street. As a result, Columbus has created a great local arts scene. One of my favorite galleries is Mahan Gallery. The gallery’s mission is to make fine art accessible to the beginning or seasoned collector. From my perspective, they create this experience by exhibiting top-notch art in a polished but unpretentious way.
Go check out there current show Keep Calm. According to their site, Keep Calm is an exploration of memory and a metaphorical embrace of innocence.
Paintings at Terra Gallery

It’s time for another shameless promotion slightly outside of the Strategic Aesthetics theme. I used to live in Columbus and barely missed the monthly Gallery Hop in the Short North. I have a ton of respect for the local arts scene up there, so I’m proud to announce I’ll be a part of it for the first time. This month, four of my paintings are on display at Terra Gallery in Columbus. Pictured above are (clockwise) Green Study #1, Fraser Island Highway, Black Horizon, and Fishing for Seaworms.
More of Diane Hay’s Art
I’ve been really sensitive to the use of color in product design lately. Much of this inspiration comes from my interior designer wife and artist mother-in-law. The three of us just installed Diane’s latest series of work at Brutopia in Cincinnati’s Clifton neighborhood, which will be up through June. It’s a massive display of colors, check out these photos from our installation.

Art Website Updated
Nearly every successful designer will cite experimentation as an essential element to keeping your eye and your mind sharp. I experiment in three key ways – by entering design competitions, writing on this blog, and creating fine art. I reminded readers that I have my work at Sidewinder coffee shop in Northside, and now I wanted to announce that my website has been updated with photos of this work. If you’re not in Cincinnati to see it in person, check out the site and let me know what you think!

Christoph Niemann’s I Lego N.Y.
Via Adam Richardson’s blog, I discovered this New York Times piece on artist Christoph Niemann. His work is stripped down to only the necessary elements but at the same time it is surprising and humorous. This is what I look for in good design and it’s great to see Niemann create these rich stories out of only a few pieces of lego.
Red Tree Gallery Exhibition

This weekend Cincinnati’s Red Tree Gallery will host their latest exhibition, Evoke II. The show features three of my paintings and three pieces from my friend and colleague Demetrius Romanos. Evoke II’s themeĀ is to create anew, especially by means of the imagination. The opening reception is this Friday, February 13th from 6-9 and will stay up until March 7th.
Diane Hay: Eye for Color
My mother-in-law is a really talented artist. Specifically, she sees and understands color at a level I didn’t realize exists. In the past, she’s been a graphic designer, art director, house painter, and now a fine artist. I’m looking for ways to help her promote and share her work, so I set up a tumblr site for her. Which of your favorite social media sites/tools are best for artists?
